A historic Stockport building thought to have links to the town’s Viaduct could be restored to create new homes.

Plans to renovate and extend a grade II-listed site, based at 40 Sandy Lane in Reddish near Tiviot Way, have been submitted to Stockport council by Shawfield Park Ltd.

The company is aiming to reinstate the building and convert it into three new homes.

According to Historic England, the building could date back to the late 1800s, but a planning report has highlighted that the site has ‘been allowed to fall into disrepair’, with many of the original features having been ‘removed or damaged’ over time.

Proposals have been tabled to add a ‘respectful’ single-storey extension to the back of the house, reinstating parts of the building, and rebuilding a former stable block that had been demolished.

A heritage report on the home states that it has been lived in by figures from Stockport’s past, including Thomas Cartwright who was ‘Mayor of Stockport in 1813’ and is thought to have lived there from ‘at least 1838’.

The report states: ‘He was said to be part of the committee set up by Stockport council in 1837 to lobby for the London to Manchester Railway to be built through Stockport, thus ensuring the construction of the viaduct’.

The building is reported to have been left empty for ‘a number of years’ since the early 2000s, and ending up in its current state.

If the plans are approved, work on the site could include keeping and restoring 'a number of elements within the building that are original and of significance'.

According to Stockport council’s website, the application is set to be decided by Monday, May 19.
